An Eclectic Gastronomy of Sound

I Am the Center: Private Issue New Age Music in America 1950-1990

LITA107_Highres_AlbumCover“Dogs flew spaceships! The Aztecs invented the vacation! Men and women are the same sex! Our forefathers took drugs! Your brain is not the boss! Yes! That’s right! Everything you know is wrong!
Hello seeker! Now don’t feel alone here in the New Age, because there’s a seeker born every minute.”

Counterculture comedy troupe The Firesign Theatre parodied the new age movement on their 1974 album Everything You Know Is Wrong (a hilarious album – seek it out if you haven’t heard it), way back before the term “new age” was common.

This new collection is a more serious look back at the genre – a look back to when new age music was the domain of some of the most experimental musicians working anywhere.   There’s some great stuff here which deserves rediscovery and reassessment.
