“Romeo and the Lonely Girl” – from Jailbreak by Thin Lizzy (1976)
Overshadowed on their classic album Jailbreak by “The Boys are Back in Town” (sometimes it seems that’s the only song they’re known for), this is a track that does occasionally make it onto Lizzy compilations but it’s still somewhat of an outlier. Lyrically, it reminds me of early/mid 70s Springsteen, and though the lyrics aren’t quite as good as that, it’s got that same outlaw romanticism. Still, how can you not be charmed by forced rhymes like “Oh poor Romeo / Sittin’ out on his own-ee-o”? Musically, it’s refreshingly sharp, snappy and muscular and when the guitar solo comes in it brings the epic grandeur up another notch.
