Song of the Day #12 – “Timeless” by John Abercrombie

“Timeless” – from Timeless, by John Abercrombie, Jan Hammer, Jack De Johnette (1975)

Intrigue and mystery on this closing track to guitarist Abercrombie’s debut album. While he would go more in a straight ahead jazz direction later in his career, he was firmly ensconced in the sounds of fusion and Indian music on Timeless….but with more depth  than many of his fusion contemporaries. And there’s also some of that nordic spaciousness present on most ECM Records releases.  I’m wondering if Rush wasn’t listening to this album…check out the beginning of their “Xanadu” and compare it with the beginning of this track.  (And yes, this is the same Jan Hammer who went on to write the theme to Miami Vice. Go figure.)
