Song of the Day #16 – “Sitting Here Watching” by Mike Cooper

“Sitting Here Watching” – from Trout Steel by Mike Cooper (1970)

From Cooper’s third album, a record that continued his move away from strict country blues to a more free-form jazz/folk. Though jazz is not as evident in this track (seek out the 11-minute “I’ve Got Mine” for that), there’s still a loose-yet-confidant sound and you can feel him continue to throw off the shackles of tradition as he rolls on down the road, guitar in hand.  He would end up rolling to some strange destinations, including as a musician combining field recordings and warped Polynesian influenced exotica/lounge, which is the genre he’s been exploring for the last few decades.
