Andy Summers: “Luna”

mysteriousBest known as guitarist for the Police, Andy Summers has a long and rich series of instrumental guitar albums. From Mysterious Barricades (1988) comes “Luna”, a peaceful song of the night, a song of the moon. Summers’ tone is clean and emotive over the slow, steady pulse of David Hentschel’s synthesizer, his guitar asking questions and providing resolutions in each stanza.  Wistful, tender, somewhat mysterious, and with an over-riding depth and calm throughout, the track is like a warm night cloaked in purples, blues and greens. The synth highlights are bright, smooth glimmers of stars, adding texture to the repeating guitar pattern.  In the last section, an acoustic guitar echoes and answers that main guitar melody. A night-lit pool, palm fronds against a yellow moon….
